Self Care: Graphic Tanks + Joggers

    Graphic Tanks + Joggers

The most trendy buzz word in my “mama” circle is?????

    SELF CARE.

Recentlyish I was asked what I do for self-care.  How I ensure my needs are met.  And well…. I didn’t have an answer.  I stood there speechless.

Fast forward several weeks.  Declan is in school and Brendan is traveling so I have a lot of time to think about myself.  I have a lot of time to focus on myself.  And it feels super unnatural and awkward. There is such a taboo about making yourself the focus of your own life, especially as a mother.  BUT why???  Everyone knows that if mama isn’t happy no one is happy but no one is comfortable with making mama the focus.  After I was asked how I take care of myself I spent a great deal of time thinking about what makes ME happy, what make ME feel complete and how do I make ME the center of my own attention.  A lot of women exercise, a lot of women spend a day at the spa, a lot of women do happy hours and believe me I try to do all of those but I need something different.

I need ME time.  I need alone time.  It took me years to realize that I need alone time.  For reflection, for thought, for planning, for decompressing, for comfort, for SELF-CARE. I used to be scared to be alone with my thoughts and I was always seeking distractions. I was constantly seeking “noise” in my life to avoid the “noise” in my own head.  Being comfortable and alone with my thoughts was scary… Its like I was scared to think for myself.  If I listened to my mind I would have to change my life, if I listened to my brain I would have to change my heart and that scared me.  It scared me enough that I avoided it and created other things to think about.  I, essentially, created drama in my life to avoid dealing with my own life.  Talk about the opposite of self-care.  In fact, it made it impossible to engage in worthwhile, effective self-care because it was easier.

Being alone and giving myself the time to address my thoughts is HARD.  It is harder than ignoring it.  Addressing and unpacking those thoughts is uncomfortable and sometimes it is yucky.  It’s a big mess up in my brain, it’s an emotional dumping ground, it’s a hodge podge of missed opportunities, regrets, celebrations and fears.  Over the last several years I have worked really hard at becoming comfortable with my thoughts, with learning to silence the outside “noise” to focus on the inside, with being alone.  It is challenging and sometimes downright impossible but in an effort to focus on self-care it is time I go back to listening to myself.  For some reason, I have slipped back into avoiding myself and of creating outside “noise” loud enough to drown out the inside “noise”

While we lived in London and the year prior to that I had done a great job of focusing on my own thoughts, of learning to love being alone with my mind and to embrace the chaos of my own life.  Some might say I had no other choice given I was across the world but it was as much that as it was the internal feeling of knowing something needed to change.  I was ready to feel differently.  And I am again, ready to feel differently.

Who doesn’t love this jogger trend??!?!? It is like wearing fancy sweatpants out of the house and I am obsessed.  I think these are my third or fourth pair!  I love to dress them up (like in this look) with a fun tee, wedges or heels and some fancy fun jewelry.  But I am not afraid to throw them on with a tee, flip flops and cardigan (perfect for school drop off).  This graphic tank is old but this trend is still hot!!  You can find ones with just anything on them… I have linked a few of my other favorites <here> <here> and <here> .  Again such a versatile piece to have in your closet- throw it on with joggers or distressed denim for a super cute trendy look.

I, personally, tend to gravitate towards simple accessories.  I almost exclusively wear stud earrings (especially in my everyday life) and stick to the same four-six bracelets.  My style is pretty classic and easy.  Below I have linked my favorite stud earrings and bracelets- most of which you can find me any day of the week.

    taking care

Self-care comes in many forms and is different for each person.  Self-care is not just about getting away from you children, or your job or your spouse… it is about embracing yourself.  It is about making yourself and your happiness a priority. Whatever form your self-care takes on I challenge you to remain authentic, real and transparent with your journey.  Embracing my feelings, my wandering mind and noisy thoughts is how I practice self-care.  Being alone and making the time to decompress, relax and reflect is how I practice self-care.  Recognizing and accepting myself as important is how I practice self-care.

    How do you do it???

Fall Fashion Finds: Booties Under $150

This September I decided to branch out a bit from my usual content. I had many requests for practical and useful styling advice and so each week throughout the month I will do a Fall Fashion Finds post.  These posts are intended to inspire and provide quick and easy advice.  I hope you find it helpful… and if there is something specific you want to see let me know.  My goal is always to deliver meaningful and useful content.

Any fashionista knows that booties are an absolute must have this fall season.  Throwing on a cute bootie can take a boring t-shirt and jeans to stylish outfit wearable for any occasion.  They are the most versatile shoe and a main staple in a well equipped fall closet. While I do tend to splurge on my shoes you do not need to spend a fortune to keep your look updated and trendy. All of the booties here are under $150 and many are under $100.

Click on any product you like for shopping details- all the pictures are linked!

    shop: one // two // three // four // five // six // seven // eight // nine // ten
    a few tips on purchasing:

Most of these run TTS (true to size) however I have found that Sam Edelman run a bit narrow so order one size up.  Also, Sorels and Sperrys only come in whole sizes so order one size up as you would normally wear a thicker sock with these types of boots,  Also,  most of what is linked is from Zappos and Nordstrom as both stores have great, if not free, shipping rates and shipping times.  Furthermore, both offer free returns.

    Bootie Breakdown:

This season I am loving the flat/low heels as I am finding it more realistic and practical for life.  They are easy to throw on with denim, skirts, dresses or even shorts (f your location is summer year round).  So many of the styles also incorporate perforation which adds the best detailing and change to a simple bootie.

Here are a few of my favorite flat/low heel booties

Adding a block heel bootie to your closet is a must; especially if you are a working lady!  They are classic, clean, sophisticated and trendy. I love how easy they are to transition from day to night and how a block heel elevates a normal outfit to classy and elegant.

Here are my favorite block heel booties

As a mountain mama and Colorado native I tend to gravitate towards weather friendly shoes.  I typically buy a new pair of boots for the winter season and this year is no different.  Below are great picks for warm and dry feet all season long!

A few weather friendly bootie finds

Whether you are more casual or like to dress up, booties are perfect for you.  They are essential for the mom on-the-go or the busy professional lady.  I love so many of these and my shopping cart keeps getting filled up.  These picks are just the tip of the iceberg so let me know if you find some you love- I get so excited about new finds!!

Let me know what you want to see next week!!!

    With love,

    Seven and Some

    Husband+ Wife

Its been SEVEN years since Brendan and I said “I Do”….

Now, I know seven years isn’t a life time.  It isn’t even a decade.  But seven seems to be magic number for marriages as many say if you make it past this mark you are almost guaranteed to be together forever!!  Not that I need any more reassurance- I have the man of my dreams, my balancing other half, my world traveling companion and my best friend.

I remember our wedding day as if it were yesterday. It was the absolute BEST DAY OF MY LIFE.  I would get married to Brendan every year if I could.  Our wedding day is my most favorite memory- EVER.  Brendan and I have shared enough over the past seven years to last a lifetime yet we are only getting started.  We have been so blessed in our marriage and have done more in our short seven years than many do in their whole lives.  I am so incredibly grateful and humbled by the memories and experiences we have shared.

In honor of our SEVEN years I wanted to share my top SEVEN highlights since August 28, 2010.

    1. Traveling – we have been to three different continents, a dozen or so countries and countless cities around the world.
    2. The birth of our son and the first year we spent with him in and out of the hospital.
    3. Moving our family across the world.
    4. Standing by his side when Brendan graduated with his MBA.
    5. Watching Suits or How I Met Your Mother or Narcos late night on the couch.
    6. Skiing
    7. Fireworks on the 4th of July.

As I think about these seven memories (and the hundreds of others) I am flushed with emotion about all the other times we have spent together and all the times we have been apart.  Brendan and I have grown so much over the past seven years of marriage and decade of time together- both personally and as a couple.  We were young, restless, fearless idiots when we met.  Ten years later we are older, still restless, a little less fearless, new parents but still idiots in love.

I asked Brendan for his top 3 memories of our seven years of marriage and he of course grumbled and groaned but he did give me a few.  So here are his candid unfiltered responses…

    1. Walking through Clapham Common at dusk (park in London)
    2. Marrakesh Souks
    3. Mediterranean beach in Alicante Spain
    4. Skiing Union Bowl with you on powder days
    5. Taking you to Lake Geneva on boat rides
    6. Declans 1st and last day at Northcote House (his nursery school in London)
    7. Christmas in London
    8. Dinners in the back yard at Skyward (the first house we bought together)
    9. The 15 minutes before Declans birth going into operating room
    10. Moving to London

A little walk down memory lane with these amazing photos!

Happy Anniversary to my love.  To my other half.  Thank you.  For standing by me.  For supporting me.  For arguing with me.  For challenging me.  For loving me.  For trusting me.  For our son.  For allowing me to grow.  For allowing me to fall.  For teaching me.  For letting me teach you.  For traveling with me.  For exposing me to life.  For giving me the best life.

I love you more today than yesterday but not as much as tomorrow.

    Marriage + Love

The time has come.  Three (and a half) years have gone by.  Declan is headed to full time Preschool.  And I am in no way ready for this.

Recently I read an honest and heartfelt post (link here) from Shannon of Moms Without Labels and it left me in tears-not only because it was beautifully written but because I could relate so much.  She took all of my emotions and eloquently wrote them down… only they were her own.  Thank you Shannon for inspiring me to share my own story about Declan’s last days at home and the transition back to school.

Weather Permitting: Off the Shoulder Dress

    Off the Shoulder

What is it about rainy days that make you all sentimental and nostalgic?  What is it about spending time with family that makes you all sappy and emotional???  And then just like that the sun comes out and you feel revived and ready to face life.  Please tell me I am not alone….please tell me you are as influenced by the weather as me…. come on, anyone???

The weather this week has given me opportunities to embrace both.  A lot of rainy day reflections.  And a lot of sunny day flourishing.  And I think I needed a bit of both. To be honest I have turned into a super sentimental, emotional person.  In fact most days I could cry on cue.  Maybe it is motherhood, maybe it is being a consultants wife, maybe it is being 35 or maybe it is knowing that each day is a gift I can never get back.  Sometimes I want to re-live moments or even days…. but reality would not have it.  So, instead I cry a lot #truth

August has always been a time of transition for me- I mean as a child it was “back to school time” and then when I became a teacher it was more “back to school”.  Each year I would go through the mixed emotions of leaving the long summer days behind and starting a new grade.  Or when I went to college the emotions of leaving home and starting on my own.  And when I was teaching the anxious feelings of meeting my new students and new colleagues.  Each August brought about reflections of the months past and aspirations for the coming year.  And this August in no exception.

Over the last several days (and actually several weeks, if I am honest) I have been thinking about my “life”.  Now, if that isn’t the broadest topic ever I am not sure what is.  However, what it comes down to is the little things and the feelings.  Its the little things that send my mind spinning into reflection.  Its the little things that I can hang my hat on to keep my emotions in check. It the sound of the rain against the window reminding me of the amazing opportunities we had abroad.  The thunderstorms bringing back the memories of Declans time in the hospital.  The bright sun challenging me to find the best in a situation despite my instinct to see the negative.  The warmth of the day helping me refresh my soul and appreciate all I have.  The cool evenings lending themselves to a little reminiscing of life before a child and a spouse.  But at the end of the day, no matter the weather, no matter the time of year,  I am left with overwhelming feelings of gratitude and appreciation.  Each day I am reminded just how lucky I am to live this life.

DISCLAIMER: THIS POST CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS.  CLICKING ON THEM DOES NOT COST YOU ANYTHING.  THERE IS A POTENTIAL I WILL EARN A SMALL COMMISSION IF ITEMS ARE PURCHASED.

shop the look:  Dress // Shoes // Bag // Earrings

I wanted to be simple and classic with this look. I wanted to keep it neutral and easy.  Both THIS dress and THESE shoes are the  definition of simple, classic and easy.  Off the shoulder is a HOT HOT HOT trend right now and it makes for a nice flare on a neutral dress.  The simple eye-let of THIS dress was what stood out for me.  And it is under $40.  There is still plenty of summer left to snag it up.  THESE  simple nude heels are a classic pair that can be worn across the board.  Paired here with a dress really keeps them simple and neutral but don’t be afraid to throw them on with boy-friend jeans and a tee.  Be prepared to see THESE heels a lot more in the coming months.

My EARRINGS are apart of the Sugar FIx line from Bauble Bar.  I love the great price, the great selection and the availability.  I mean who doesn’t shop at Target….. you know you do.

As always I have tried to link several options for all the items in varying price ranges.

    rainy reflections and sunny starts

I am thankful each day for Brendan.

I am appreciative of those friends who continue to support and lift me up.

I am blow away by my love for Declan.

I am grateful for my parents undying support and love.

I am lucky to do what I love and share my life.

I am blessed to live in a place that is endlessly gorgeous and breathtaking.

I am indebted to the memories of my life and how they have shaped me.

August weather seems to be as unpredictable as my life; rainy and reflective mixed with a fair amount of sun and fresh starts.  Despite the ever changing forecast of life I am confident knowing that each day I am given the gift to embrace, love, reflect and change.

    Writers Block: Summer Dress

    JCrew Summer Dress

So, it is August.  Summer is ending.  Dresses have to be put away (but not before you snag this new one). I have writers block.  Too much on my mind.

So, contrary to popular belief writers block is not always a lack of things to say.  In fact, this time I have WAY TOO much to say.  My mind is constantly writing blog posts; as I wash the dishes, while I watch the ever addicting RHOC, while I am reading Declan bedtime stories, as I drive around in the car.  This is not the first time this has happened to me and actually is quite normal for me.  First off, my mind almost never slows down. It is constantly thinking about something and sometimes without me even aware of it until I am so lost in thought I realize I have missed half the show I was watching or have to go back and re-read the last four pages of my book (maybe that is why I can’t seem to finish a book these days).  Secondly, when I was teaching I would find myself creating lessons and activities for my kiddos embedded in my everyday life. Finding books that would teach a lesson, thinking about how to use/teach money in a meaningful way or even just how to have the kiddos practice writing their names.

Now the problem with this is NOT a shortage of ideas but I am so lost in my mind and seem to be generating so many ideas that I get SO overwhelmed that I don’t do anything.  My mom always says to me “not doing anything is actually doing something” and she is right.  I am not doing anything but in reality that is doing something…. NOT WRITING, shutting down and turning inward.  I go back to my ideas and ruminate on them. Leave them just where they are… ideas swirling around in my mind.  By not writing and by not allowing these topics to surface I am smothering myself in my own world.  And it doesn’t feel all that great.

Believe me I am not coming up with earth shattering topics, I am not ruminating about huge decisions or even thinking about something new or extraordinary. But even the little stuff can be overwhelming when kept inside and harbored.  More often than not it is the small things compounding on themselves that cause the most damage.  I pride myself on being honest and open, here in this space, as I have developed it as a safe place.  And I am learning that not every post needs to be mind blowing, not every post needs to touch the depths of my life and not every post needs to be soooo emotional.  So I might as well write it down and send it out.  Stop keeping it all inside.  BUT then I worry you all will leave.  I worry that you will find me boring, average and mundane.  As I am only as successful as my readers are engaged my goal is to be entertaining, connective and inspiring.  My challenge is to find the balance and retain those qualities while writing about the ordinary.  At the end of the day my life is not always extraordinary… I am just an average girl sharing her thoughts on life.

    Photos: Jenna Sparks Photography

shop the look: dress // jacket // flip flops // purse <similar> // sunnies

In my opinion this outfit speaks for itself and is the essence of summer style.  I love to wear dresses in the summer (even with a toddler) as they are light, flowy and easy to move in.  This knot front summer dress from J.Crew Factory was the prefect addition to my summer wardrobe.  It is the a perfect neutral color pallet and is easily dressed up or worn casually.  Pairing this dress with wedges like <these> would dress it up for a fancy brunch or date night.  I threw on some easy flip flops and a denim jacket as I tend to be more casual in the summer.  I kept the jewelry minimal and really let the dress be the statement.

This basket bag is one of my late-grandmothers.  She was a stylish lady and I am luck to find pieces from her wardrobe still floating around.  I have linked a few other basket bags (below) as they are HOT HOT HOT this season.

Make sure to click through and find some great new summer styles.

    unblocking

Now that you know I have a ton of ideas you can expect some new posts.  Most are common everyday life things.  Like friendships, like seasons changing, like pet peeves, like emotions.  But don’t worry I do have a few topics that are emotional, raw and real. I promise to remain authentic and as transparent as possible.  I promise to continue to share my life with you; as “boring” as that may be at times.

With all the being said….what I really want is to know what you want to read??  What topics do you want more of, want less of???  Hep me create an even better space for you!!!

    With Love,
